Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground turkey

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Marinara Sauce:

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix for a tender texture.

Form Meatballs: Using your hands, scoop out about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Place the formed meatballs on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat until all the mixture is used, spacing the meatballs about an inch apart.

Bake Meatballs: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are browned and cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F/74°C).

Prepare Marinara Sauce: While meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and allow it to cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Combine Meatballs and Marinara: Once the meatballs are done, carefully add them to the simmering marinara sauce. Stir gently to coat the meatballs in the sauce. Cook for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Serve: Serve the baked turkey meatballs over spaghetti, polenta, or on their own. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and additional grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
