The term "casserole" comes from the French word for "saucepan" or "stew pot," which perfectly encapsulates the dish's essence. Casseroles have a rich history that can be traced back to French cuisine, where they were originally used to cook hearty meals over long periods. As the concept spread across Europe, each culture adapted the idea to suit local tastes and available ingredients. This evolution saw casseroles transform from simple one-pot meals into elaborate dishes that could feature a variety of proteins, vegetables, and starches.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper, diced (any color)

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce

2 cups uncooked rotini pasta

4 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain the excess fat and return the beef to the skillet.

Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced onion, minced garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, uncooked rotini, beef broth, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients.

Transfer to Casserole Dish: Pour the beef mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish evenly.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and stir the mixture well.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top of the casserole. Return it to the oven (uncovered) and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
