Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

For the Chocolate Chip Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Topping:

Additional chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until smooth.

        - Add in the eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

          - Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir until just combined (do not overmix). Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.

            Prepare the Cookie Dough:

              - In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well incorporated.

                  - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

                    Assemble the Layers:

                      - Carefully spoon the cookie dough on top of the brownie layer. Spread it evenly across the brownie batter. (You may want to refrigerate the cookie dough for about 15-20 minutes to make it easier to spread if it’s too soft.)

                        - If desired, sprinkle additional chocolate chips on top.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter. The edges should look set, and the top should be lightly golden.

Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes. Use the parchment overhang to lift the brownies out of the pan, then cut into squares. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
