Ingredients

14 oz (400g) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

1/4 cup mirin (sweet rice wine)

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons rice vinegar

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

1 tablespoon cornstarch

3 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Chopped green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Start by cutting the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. This size will help them cook evenly and become crispy.

Make the Teriyaki Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the brown sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside.

Coat the Tofu: In a mixing bowl, toss the tofu cubes gently with cornstarch until they are evenly coated. This step helps achieve a crispy texture when frying.

Fry the Tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches). Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Use a spatula to carefully turn the cubes for even cooking.

Glaze the Tofu: Once all the tofu is crispy, reduce the heat to medium-low. Pour the teriyaki sauce over the tofu and gently toss to coat the cubes evenly. Allow everything to simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens around the tofu.

Serve the Tofu: Remove from heat, and transfer the Crispy Teriyaki Tofu Cubes to a serving platter. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish.

Enjoy!: Serve the crispy tofu warm over rice, noodles, or alongside your favorite vegetables for a delightful meal.
