Crunchy Sesame Tofu Nuggets

Ingredients
  

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for a gluten-free option)

1/2 cup sesame seeds (white and black mixed for color)

1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp smoked paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey, if not vegan)

1 tbsp rice vinegar

2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions
 

Prepare Tofu:

    - Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes or rectangles, approximately 1-inch thick.

      Coat the Tofu:

        - In a shallow dish, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

          - In a separate bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, maple syrup, and rice vinegar until well combined.

            - Place the sesame seeds and panko breadcrumbs in another shallow dish.

              Dredge Tofu:

                - Dip each tofu piece first into the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.

                  - Next, dip it into the soy sauce mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.

                    - Finally, roll the tofu in the sesame seeds and panko mixture, ensuring it's evenly coated. Repeat with all tofu pieces.

                      Fry Tofu Nuggets:

                        - Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. You want enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan.

                          - Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated tofu nuggets in batches (avoid overcrowding the pan).

                            - Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Add more oil as needed for each batch.

                              Drain and Serve:

                                - Transfer the crispy tofu nuggets to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

                                  - Allow them to cool for a minute before serving.

                                    Optional Dipping Sauce:

                                      - For a delicious dip, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, a squeeze of lime, and a pinch of chili flakes.
