Bruschetta is traditionally defined as grilled bread topped with a mixture of fresh ingredients, primarily tomatoes, garlic, and basil. The word "bruschetta" originates from the Italian verb "bruscare," which means "to roast over coals." This method of preparing bread dates back to ancient times when farmers would grill leftover bread over an open flame, enhancing its flavor and texture.

Ingredients

6 large ripe tomatoes, diced

1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 French baguette or Italian ciabatta loaf, sliced (about 12 slices)

Optional: Grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Instructions

Prepare the Tomato Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, chopped basil, minced garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. Gently toss to combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let this mixture sit for about 15-20 minutes at room temperature to allow the flavors to meld together.

Toast the Bread: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the sliced baguette or ciabatta on a baking sheet. Brush both sides lightly with olive oil. Toast in the oven for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Assembly: Once the bread is toasted, remove it from the oven. Spoon a generous amount of the tomato mixture onto each slice, allowing the juices to soak into the bread slightly.

Optional Cheese Finish: If you enjoy a cheesy twist, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the bruschetta before serving.

Serve: Arrange the bruschetta on a serving platter and enjoy immediately while the bread is warm and crispy!
