Ingredients

1 loaf of thick brioche or challah bread (10-12 slices)

4 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon brown sugar (for topping)

Pinch of salt

Cooking spray or melted butter (for greasing)

Maple syrup (for serving)

Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray or melted butter.

Prepare the Bread: Cut the loaf of brioche or challah bread into thick sticks, about 1-inch wide. This will give you those perfect, dunkable French toast sticks.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, and heavy cream until well combined. Add in the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.

Coat the Bread: Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for about 10-15 seconds on each side. Ensure they’re evenly coated but not too soggy.

Place on Baking Sheet: Arrange the soaked bread sticks on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Make sure there's a little space between each stick for even baking.

Add Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the bread sticks for a sweet crispy topping.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, flipping the sticks halfway through to ensure they get golden brown on both sides.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar (if desired), and accompanied by maple syrup for dipping.

Enjoy your crispy, golden, and irresistible baked French toast sticks that are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a delightful snack!
