The foundation of any meatball casserole is, of course, the meat. In this recipe, you can choose between ground beef and ground turkey, each offering distinct flavors and textures. Ground beef is favored for its rich, savory taste and higher fat content, which keeps the meatballs moist and flavorful during cooking. On the other hand, ground turkey is a leaner alternative that can be seasoned to enhance its flavor profile. Both options are excellent, and your choice will depend on your dietary preferences and the flavor experience you wish to create.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-seasoned)

1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup ricotta cheese

1/2 cup chopped fresh basil (optional, for garnish)

1 cup cooked pasta of your choice (spiral or penne work well)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.

Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.

Cook Pasta: While the meatballs are baking, cook your pasta according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Layer the Casserole: In a large casserole dish, spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom. Arrange half of the cooked pasta on top. Next, add half of the meatballs, followed by dollops of ricotta cheese and half of the mozzarella cheese. Pour half of the remaining marinara sauce over everything.

Repeat Layers: Add the remaining pasta, followed by the rest of the meatballs, more ricotta, and the last of the marinara sauce. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake Casserole: Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh basil if desired.
