Ingredients

4 Italian sausage links (mild or spicy, based on preference)

1 bell pepper (red, yellow, or green, sliced)

1 medium onion (sliced)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hoagie rolls

1 cup marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Sausages: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a little olive oil. Once hot, add the Italian sausage links and cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly before slicing into diagonal pieces.

Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add more olive oil if needed, and toss in the sliced bell pepper and onion. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Sauté until the vegetables have softened, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Hoagies: Split the hoagie rolls lengthwise (but not all the way through) and toast them lightly in the oven for about 3-4 minutes. Once toasted, place them on a baking sheet. Spread a generous layer of marinara sauce on each hoagie roll.

Add Filling: Layer the sliced sausage evenly across the rolls, followed by the sautéed bell peppers and onions.

Cheese It Up: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese generously over the top of each hoagie.

Bake: Place the assembled hoagies in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool for a minute or two. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, slice, and serve hot.
