Ingredients

1 cup fresh orange juice (about 4-5 oranges)

Zest of 2 oranges

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons cornstarch

3 large egg yolks

Pinch of salt

Optional: Whipped cream and orange slices for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Orange Base: In a medium saucepan, combine the fresh orange juice, orange zest, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is warm, but do not let it boil.

Make the Cream Base: In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, cornstarch, egg yolks, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

Combine and Cook: Gradually pour the warm orange mixture into the cream mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Once combined, return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

Cool the Mixture: Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. This will help prevent a skin from forming on top.

Prepare for Freezing: Once cooled, pour the mixture into an 8x8-inch square baking dish lined with parchment paper. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Freeze: Place the dish in the freezer for about 4-6 hours, or until the bars are completely set and firm. If desired, you can also stir the mixture halfway through freezing for a creamier texture.

Cut and Serve: Once set, remove the bars from the dish using the parchment paper. Cut into squares or bars and serve immediately. You can garnish with whipped cream and orange slices for an added touch.

Store: Keep any leftovers wrapped in plastic wrap in the freezer for up to one month, allowing them to soften slightly at room temperature before serving.
