Ingredients

4 slices of thick-cut brioche or challah bread

2 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp unsalted butter

2 tbsp sugar (for caramelizing apples)

Maple syrup or caramel sauce for drizzling (optional)

Whipped cream for garnish (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: In a bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice and set aside. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the apples and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar. Sauté until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Make the French Toast Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar until well combined.

Dip the Bread: Dip each slice of brioche or challah into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for about 30 seconds on each side. Make sure each slice is well-coated.

Cook the French Toast: In the same skillet used for the apples, place a little more butter if needed and heat over medium-low. Add the soaked bread slices and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. You may need to do this in batches.

Assemble the Skillet: Once the French toast is cooked, add it back to the skillet or transfer to a serving plate. Top the warm French toast with the caramelized apples from earlier, ensuring to distribute evenly.

Garnish and Serve: Drizzle with maple syrup or caramel sauce, add a dollop of whipped cream if desired, and dust with powdered sugar for an elegant touch.

Enjoy: Serve immediately while warm and enjoy this delightful take on classic French toast!
